BUILD THE COW. IMPROVE THE HERD.

Balanced SimAngus Genetics, Built Around the Female First

At Broken S Land & Cattle, our genetics program is backed by more than 40 years of raising commercial cattle across several breeds and combinations. That experience taught us what matters most on the ranch: fertility, longevity, maternal function, and efficient performance that contributes to real-world profitability.

Today, we specialize in Red SimAngus genetics designed to help improve our customers' bottom line. Every breeding decision starts with the female and one question:

How do we make the next cow better?

The goal is to produce females and males that work, last, and help set both our operation and our customers up for long-term success.

If you build for the heifer, the steer will follow.

Our Selection Priorities

What We Select For

We select for cattle that combine the traits that matter most to long-term profitability. Fertility, longevity, maternal ability, structure, performance, and disposition all have to work together.

Fertility

A cow that does not breed back cannot stay in the program. Fertility is one of the first traits we protect because it directly impacts long-term productivity.

Longevity

We want cattle that stay useful for years, not cattle that burn out after one or two seasons. Longevity starts with soundness, fertility, structure, and function.

Maternal Ability

The female side matters here. We want cows that can calve, mother, nurse quickly, raise a calf, and do their job without constant extra help.

Feet & Structure

Good feet are not optional. Our cattle need to travel, graze, breed, and hold up across rocky hills, river bottoms, and real pasture conditions.

Performance

Performance matters, but it has to stay balanced. We want cattle that grow and add value without sacrificing maternal quality or long-term usefulness.

Disposition

Cattle should be manageable and safe to work around. Disposition problems are not something we ignore or breed around.

Simangus

What Is SimAngus?

SimAngus cattle combine Simmental and Angus genetics to create cattle with a practical blend of maternal strength, fertility, performance, efficiency, and adaptability.

At Broken S, we primarily focus on Red SimAngus genetics. We also maintain a small, elite group of black Simmental cows to produce SimAngus cattle for customers who require a black hide.

Simmental Influence Can Add:

  • Growth

  • Muscle

  • Performance

  • Maternal strength

  • Added pounds

  • Breed flexibility

Angus Influence Can Add:

  • Carcass quality

  • Maternal efficiency

  • Calving ease

  • Fertility

  • Market acceptance

  • Proven cow power

Our experience raising commercial cattle showed us the benefits of bringing Simmental and Angus genetics together. The combination allows us to focus on economically important traits rather than selecting for a single trait.

Simmental genetics can add growth, muscle, performance, and maternal strength. Angus genetics can complement those qualities with fertility, efficiency, calving ease, and carcass quality.

That balance helps us develop cattle that can perform in our fescue-based environment while maintaining the maternal function and longevity we value.

For our customers, the goal is useful genetics that can strengthen a herd, produce quality replacement females, and add performance and consistency to future calf crops.

Breed Composition

What Percentages of SimAngus Do We Have?

Our cattle can range in breed makeup depending on the animal, pedigree, registration, and breeding decision behind it.

In general, SimAngus cattle may range from around 25% Simmental influence up to purebred Simmental, with different percentages available depending on the year and what we currently have for sale.

But we do not breed by percentage alone.

Breed composition matters, but it is only one part of the picture. We also consider the cow family, structure, feet, disposition, EPDs, environment, and how that animal can contribute to the next generation.

Because a percentage on paper does not mean much if the animal cannot perform in the pasture.

Female First

The Cow Herd Comes First

Our program is built around the females because we believe great bulls start with great cows.

Maternal functionality is the foundation of our breeding program. We continually refine our cow families to build greater consistency and focus on the females that can move the herd forward.

We want cows that can breed back, raise a quality calf, maintain flesh, travel, graze, stay sound, and remain productive year after year.

Every breeding decision comes back to building a stronger, more consistent cow herd that can produce quality bulls and heifers for our program and our customers.

Raised on Real Ground

Raised in the Same Conditions They’re Expected to Work In

We believe you have to know what your ranch can and cannot produce.

The Ozarks present unique challenges, including fescue pastures. We do not have cornfields or silage wagons sitting around to cover up cattle that cannot make it on forage. Our grass is predominantly fescue, with other grasses and forage blended in.

Our cattle run across rocky hills and boggy river bottoms, along with anywhere else we can find grass to graze.

Those conditions help us identify cattle that can slick off early and maintain flesh. We want cattle that stay sound and turn acres of fescue pasture into pounds of beef.

Whether they become replacement females, sale bulls, or feeder calves, our cattle are selected to perform in real-world conditions.

Data with Stock Sense

EPDs, Genomics & Common Sense

We use modern tools, but we do not believe numbers replace stock sense.

EPDs, genomics, DNA testing, and performance data help us make informed breeding decisions. We also use A.I. and E.T. to create multiple sets of half and three-quarter brothers.

For our customers, those closely related genetics can help create larger, more uniform groups of calves at sale time.

The data gives us another tool for evaluating genetic potential, but the cattle still have to make sense when you look at them.

We want cattle that work on paper and in the pasture.

Disciplined Selection

Problems Don’t Get Bred Around

We are disciplined about what stays in our program.

Cows with repeated problems are removed. We look closely at feet and disposition, along with mothering ability and overall functionality.

We do not make excuses for cattle that create problems.

Treating an issue while continuing to breed it forward does not improve the herd. It only creates more problems down the road.

The cattle that stay here have to earn their place.

Find the Right Fit

Something for Every Kind of Cattleman

Our Red SimAngus genetics can fit a wide range of operations and goals.

We work with buyers looking for:

  • Two-year-old bulls for breeding season

  • Red and black SimAngus replacement females

  • Feeder calves with performance and quality

  • Red genetics for commercial programs

  • Registered cattle with useful traits

  • Black-hided SimAngus genetics

  • Pasture-ready cattle that can hold up over time

The goal is not to force every buyer into the same box.

We raise useful cattle and help each customer find genetics that make sense for their herd and operation.
