At Broken S Land & Cattle, our philosophy starts with one question:
How do we make the next cow better?
Every breeding decision comes back to the females. We believe all great bulls come from great cows, which makes maternal functionality a foundational part of our program.
We focus on cows that can perform in real conditions and raise a quality calf. They need to maintain flesh, breed back, and continue doing their job year after year.
Because whether you’re chasing steers that pay or cows that stay, it all starts with the female.

Bigger isn’t always better.
Cattle breeding is a slow, methodical process. We stay focused on the direction we want the herd to move rather than changing course with every new trend.
We focus on economically important traits that matter year after year:
Fertility
Longevity
Performance
Sound feet and legs
Maternal strength
Disposition
Structural balance
Real-world adaptability
The goal is to raise cattle with the function and eye appeal to perform in the pasture while still being pleasing to look at.
EPDs and genomics have their place, and we use the tools available to us. But those numbers still need to translate into cattle that perform in real-world conditions.
Pasture-Proven Cattle
Raised Where They Have to Work
We believe you have to know what your ranch can and cannot produce. Our pastures are predominantly fescue, with clovers, lespedeza, and warm-season grasses blended in.
Our cattle run the same way many of our neighbors run their cows — across rocky hills, through boggy river bottoms, and anywhere else we can find grass to graze. These conditions show us which cattle can perform without being managed around their weaknesses.
We want cows that can maintain their condition and raise a quality calf. They also need to breed back and stay productive in the environment where we expect them to work.

What We Want in a Cow
A good cow should look like she can do her job - and prove that she can.
At Broken S, we want females that are:

Good dispositioned
We want cows that breed early and continue doing so into their teens. They should raise a quality calf while maintaining the condition needed to stay productive year after year.
That is the kind of female we want in our herd and the kind we want our bulls to produce for our customers.
Disciplined Selection
Problems Don’t Get Bred Around
Being selective about what stays in the herd is part of making progress.
Cows with repeated problems are removed from the program. We pay close attention to feet and disposition, as well as mothering ability and overall functionality.
We do not believe in making excuses for cattle that continually create problems. Breeding those issues forward only makes it harder to improve the next generation.
The cows that remain in our program have proven they deserve to be there.
Data With Stock Sense
Using Modern Tools Without Losing Common Sense
We believe in using the best tools available, but we do not believe tools replace stock sense.
Our program utilizes modern advancements like:
EPDs
Genomics
DNA testing
AI breeding
E.T.
Performance-based selection
These tools give us more information to guide breeding decisions, but the numbers still have to match the cattle standing in front of us.
We look at the data alongside what we see in the pasture. Both need to support the direction we want the herd to move.
The best cattle prove themselves beyond the numbers.

If You Build for the Heifer, the Steer Will Follow
Our program is built around producing cattle that are functional and useful for the people who depend on them.
That may mean a bull that helps a commercial cattleman build better replacement females. It may mean genetics that strengthen a registered program or produce more consistent calves at sale time.
Whatever the goal, we believe building a better cow creates a stronger foundation for the rest of the herd.
